What is Title IX?

Title IX is a federal civil rights law from 1972 that says: schools that get federal funding cannot discriminate based on sex.

HERA offers Title IX guides for student survivors in schools, offering them in Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, etc.

Title IX guarantees you:

✓ Education free from sex-based discrimination, harassment, and violence

✓ Right to report and have your school investigate

✓ Immediate supportive measures

  • Schedule/housing changes
  • No-contact orders
  • Academic accommodations
  • Counseling resources

✓ Right to choose your level of participation

  • Getting support DOES NOT equal filing formal complaint

✓ Protection from retaliation

Definitions:

Sexual Harassment

  • Unwelcome sexual conduct that is severe, pervasive, AND objectively offensive
  • Quid pro quo (authority figure conditioning benefits on sexual favors)
  • Hostile environment (conduct so serious it denies equal access to education)

Sexual Violence

  • Sexual assault (any non-consensual sexual contact)
  • Dating/domestic violence
  • Stalking (repeated unwanted contact causing fear)
